Companies Shortlisted for Ottawa Light Rail Transit Project

Project Attracts Interest of LRT Experts from Around the Globe

OTTAWA, Oct. 21, 2011 /CNW/ - The City of Ottawa and Infrastructure Ontario today announced the companies short-listed to submit proposals to design, build, finance and maintain the Ottawa Light Rail Transit (OLRT) project.

This OLRT project is the first of several phases to implement light rail transit in the city of Ottawa and includes:

  • a 12.5-kilometre line along the existing Bus Route System (BRT) corridor from Blair Road in the east to Tunney's Pasture in the west
  • a tunnel through the downtown core
  • 13 stations, including three underground stations
The LRT system will help improve comfort and reliability of the city's transit system, help reduce traffic congestion, reduce travel times and green house gas emissions, and make the downtown core more pedestrian and cycling friendly.

Design and construction of the OLRT will create and support jobs, help strengthen the City of Ottawa and neighbouring regions' economies; and align with the City of Ottawa's Transportation Master Plan.

Over the past few months, companies from all over the world participated in a rigorous competitive request for qualifications (RFQ) process that reviewed their design, construction, maintenance and financing abilities to deliver Ottawa's Light Rail Transit project.

The OLRT will be publicly owned; it will be integrated into the City of Ottawa's existing transit service, OC Transpo and will be aligned with the city's Transportation Master Plan.

The City of Ottawa will continue to set transit fares and establish customer service standards

The City of Ottawa has engaged Infrastructure Ontario as the Commercial Procurement Lead for the OLRT project.
